Columbia University identified an untapped opportunity at 560 Riverside Drive: a basement space sitting vacant while 320 families in the building lacked convenient fitness amenities. They engaged Domoarchitecture to transform the underutilized area into a residential gym that would enhance the building’s appeal to faculty and staff.
The challenge: convert basement space into an inviting fitness environment that serves a diverse residential population—from young faculty to families with children—while working within the constraints of existing mechanical systems, low ceilings, and limited natural light typical of below-grade spaces.
Our approach focused on creating an energizing environment despite the basement location. Strategic lighting design, ventilation planning, and spatial layout transformed the perception of the space. Equipment selection and layout accommodated varied fitness needs across 320 households, from cardio to strength training to stretching areas.
The result: Columbia added a valuable residential amenity without new construction. The building gained a fitness center that supports resident retention and satisfaction, proving that underutilized basement spaces can become genuine lifestyle assets with thoughtful design.
